Anyone ever try these out? Too aggressive for a daily driving from March thru October/November? They are cheaper than MPSS though. I don't think these will last for too long although I might be wrong. Looking for 20k miles and up.

Hah, look elsewhere if you want 20k miles. Well, if you drive the car how it should with this tires on... sure you could get more if you baby it, but then what is the point of super UHP tires?

They probably wouldn't last me that long if I had your car. Especially if you are planning on participating in any auto-cross events. I also have absolutely zero experience with performance tires, so there's that.

I thought so, they look pretty aggressive, so I wasn't expecting much. Guess I will have to look else where.

Neither do I, but people love Michelin Pilot Super Sports but those are 800 for a set before mounting. I was hoping to spend 1400 on wheels and tires.

Yeah, you always hear that they are the best ones, but I could see myself roasting the rears pretty quickly. I put these on my GTI as an all around tire, and they are vastly superior to the Conti's that it came with.

I was looking more for a summer tire. I am going to be using the OEM wheels as winter wheels, so that saves me from going all season. Have you had any experiences with Hankook V12s?

No I haven't unfortunately.

Have you checked out Dunlop Direzza ZIIs? I think a set of four (205s up front and 225s out back) run about $650, though in my case the PO payed for them. Also great in the rain.

How long have yours lasted? I see that they will run me around 700 dollars, which is just within budget. Maybe I can get my parents to buy me on tire, say it should be a birthday present.

I've only put about 300 miles on them since I got the car (it's way too cold up here for anything but snow tires now), but the PO had them on for about a year before that and they seem to have held up pretty well considering he autocrossed them a couple times. A buddy of mine has a set on his WRX and speaks very highly of them also.

I will definitely consider it. I just want them to last at least 2 years. I can't spend 700 bucks on tires every year, I guess I could skip a few payments. . .

Haha, yeah I hear ya there. Remember though, you don't need sticky tires to have fun...

True story, but I want to go fast in autocross! Wide wheels are useless without good rubber to back it up!! Plus on the back roads, you can't do sideways fun!

I doubt that those tires would last 20k miles - at least if they are on the drive wheels. If the rubber compound is stiff enough to reduce wear, then that tread pattern is questionable for a long lasting tire.

That said, respect for running summer tires in the summer and winter tires in the winter.

There are a LOT of autocrossers who've ran these, especially since BFGoodrich was doing a few contingency programs (win on these tires = moar prizes) for them at regional and national events.

Here's one writeup from one of the local dudes: https://www.facebook.com/notes/hollis-r…

I have the Z2s, FWIW. I like them, but I get about 20,000 miles out of each set daily driving/autocrossing a little/tracking almost every other weekend on 'em. Decent in the rain, though.

Kinja'd!!!0

I think the compound is soft but the sidewalls are pretty stiff. I was pretty much expecting them to get somewhere in the 10k mile range, so I guess I am not surprised.

I may be a newb with tires but I am no idiot. I am keeping the OEM wheel for just this reason.

Wow, that is a lot of track time. I am not going to be tracking that often but will be doing autocross a lot. Thoughts on Z2 grip/turn-in/response so on and so forth?

Thanks for the link, lots of nice info in there!

For the non-drive wheels (hoping front) you can probably get 20k out of them, but since you said you are worried about driving in the rain, I would be a bit cautious as there doesn't seem to be much tread to dissipate water to begin with, and what tread is there will only diminish as the tire wears.

Of course, since you have winter wheels, you could always take a few minutes to swap them on if you know bad weather is coming...

I have heard that hydroplanning starts in the center of the tire, so as long as there are groves to dissipate water away from there it shouldn't be too bad.

I didn't think about the idea of a heavy rain coming and just putting the stock wheels back on. Thanks for the tip!

Like it. Very sticky when brand new. Less sticky when they've been hooned a lot, but still good. Very responsive—kind of a quieter squeal at first, but still okay with feedback. I've been happy so far.

And they are under the 700 dollar price limit I have set for myself. This is excellent!! I can totally afford these. These are very high up on the list now.

Kinja'd!!! JasonStern911 > YSI-what can brown do for you

If there is minimal tread, then even if the tire is good, there is only so much area that the water can disperse to. As long as you don't drive in conditions that exceed that, you're fine. And even then, if you drive responsibly, you're fine. But tires aren't something to skimp on. Hopefully this doesn't happen, but would you rather spend money on tires or insurance premiums?

Kinja'd!!! YSI-what can brown do for you > JasonStern911
01/31/2014 at 01:42

Kinja'd!!!0

Definitely not going to skimp on tires. I have a 1400 dollar budget for wheels and tires, which means I have about 700 for tires, which isn't bad.

Not worried. You seem like a very responsible driver instead of someone asking, getting a response, then getting mad because you didn't get the response you were wanting to hear. Respect.

Mostly daily, but also two or so autocrosses per month and a track day once in a while. I just want tires that are great on the road but don't lose grip in high performance situations. Also, I want ones that last! All for under 700 dollars. . .

I've got these of my FRS and they're great tires. Not great in the rain (No tire in this class is) and they wear pretty quickly. I wouldn't expect to get 20k out of them, more like 10 depending on your driving style. To be honest unless you plan on doing track days or autocross I'd go with something less aggressive. There are lots of tires out there that work better for DD'ing.

Kinja'd!!! YSI-what can brown do for you > d1ck

Kinja'd!!!0

I do plan on autocrossing twice a month and doing a track day, which is why I went with something so aggressive. My original choice was Michelin Pilot Super Sports but they are over 800 dollars. Was hoping for something under 700 bucks.

That was my original choice. I guess I am going to have to suck it up and pay a little bit more for tires.

The Michelins are a great all round tire, but you the Rivals are faster. Other notable tires are:

Potenza RE-11A
Dunlop ZII
Toyo R1R
Yokohama AD-08R
Hankook RS3

The Hankooks are supposed to be the fastest street tire right now, but the Rivals are a close second and are easier to drive. I've read that the ZII's have problems with chunking on the track as well.

Are these all high performance tire? What do you think has the longest tire life?

Kinja'd!!! d1ck > YSI-what can brown do for you
01/31/2014 at 12:20

Kinja'd!!!0

They're all terrible to be honest, I'm not sure which would last the longest. They're all meant to be super sticky street tires from each of the major tire manufacturers. Any one would be a great choice but as I said the Hankooks and BFG's are the hot ones right now.

Makes sense I guess. I think I might have to compromise and go with something like Pilot Super Sports, as I can't keep buying a new set of tires every year!
